Coaching at a VUCA-Plus Intersection
As a professional coach, we are often in the business of assisting the person or team of people we are coaching in their processing of information. Living and working in a world that is volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous, turbulent and contradictory (VUCA-Plus), it is quite understandable that our coaching clients might want a helping hand as they try to “figure out” what is happening and as they seek out the best ways to manage the cognitive (thoughts) and affective (emotions) challenges they face. It is like finding ourselves standing on the sidewalk seeking to cross a very busy four-way intersection. It doesn’t hurt to have someone else helping us look in all directions.
We offer essays that address three of the challenges being faced in a VUCA-Plus world: (1) getting unstuck, (2) retaining important lessons learned, and (3) considering alternative ways of viewing the world.
Unstuck
Our client often enters a session with us in a “frozen” state regarding a particular issue they are facing. Typically, they want to address this issue in our coaching session because they somehow want to break out of this “stuck position.” We can be of valuable assistance when offering one or more of several “unsticking” strategies related to a process called “reframing.” Here is link to description of these strategies: Reframing.
Retention
We are often challenged to retain a new insight regarding the VUCA-Plus world in which we are operating. That wonderful lesson is often lost. As a coach, we can assist our coaching client in the retention of the insights (which might have been gained in the coaching session). Here is link to essay regarding the enhancement of our client’s retention: Memory
States of Mind
We can also assist our coaching client by offering examples of alternative frames of mind. We offer links to three essays that describe states of mind related to the distinctive character of specific cities in the United States: New York, New Orleans, and Las Vegas.
